An English pirate started a settlement there in 1636 and in 1655 English settlers lived on the coast who were constantly besieged by Spaniards. The Royal Navy ended that in 1798 that's how British Honduras was born. It became independent in 1981.

The snorkeling paradise of Caye Caulker is located just off the coast. It takes a motorboat 45 minutes to get there from Belize city. It consists of two islands. the southern island is inhabited and the main road consists of white sand. The southern island measures 5 kilometres by 1 kilometer. Except from a few bicycles and electric carts there is almost no traffic. Everything is very relaxed. The northern island is a protected nature reserve. If you go snorkeling you can see a huge variety of tropical fish. In a somewhat shallower part you swim amongst manta's and the harmless nurse sharks.
